If you ask two people what the best coffee is, you will more than likely get two different answers. This is because everyones taste buds are different and what you like may not be palatable to someone else. However, there are some common things to look for to find the best coffee bean for your cup of coffee.
The first thing you must invest in is a coffee grinder. Forget about buying the coffee that comes already ground as you are cheating yourself out of the true flavor of the bean. The coffee just loses too much flavor after it has been ground and then sits for God only knows how long.
You also want to make sure that you are buying beans that come in a vacuum sealed bag or container and that you also have a foodsaver at home. This is because a lot of the flavor of the coffee comes from the oils in the bean and when they are exposed to air, they begin to break down. Once you crack the seal, make sure you preserve them with your foodsaver in an air tight container.
As far as the bean goes, Arabica is the smoother of the choices. The other popular bean is Robusta, but Arabica is what many of the popular coffee houses will use and it is far and away the better tasting of the two, at least to most people.
This is not to say that you will not see Robusta beans featured. However, it has a definitive bitter taste to it. It was very popular a few decades ago when the coffee machines were not as good as they are today. But there is now no need to suffer through such a rough tasting cup of coffee with the capabilities of the machines today.
Last but not least, if you are able to get your hands on fresh roasted beans, buy them. If you are able to get them right out of the roaster and seal them up, you will be getting a cup of coffee like nothing that you have ever tasted. The bean will lose flavor the longer it is out of the roaster so if you can get it closer to the end of that process, you are getting the best possible flavor available.
As we said, everyone will like a different flavor in their coffee. However, regardless of the flavors you like, all of these standards will come into play to make sure you are getting the best possible bean available for the kind of coffee that you like. Follow these guidelines and your next cup of coffee will probably be your best cup of coffee.
